In September 1843 Queen Victoria crossed the English Channel for the first time. Her destination was Tréport in north-eastern France, where the Royal party was met by Louis-Philippe, King of the French. From there the Queen was taken by road to the Château d'Eu, the King's country residence. At the end of her five-day stay at Eu, Queen Marie-Amélie presented Queen Victoria with this fan, recording the arrival on the quayside in Tréport on 2 September.
