On 7 March 1941 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth spent the day with the Polish forces in eastern Scotland. The visit included inspections of the Field Artillery position at Barry Links, and of the Coastal Artillery four-inch guns at Carnoustie, on the Angus coastline. Here the Queen's elegantly attired figure emerges from a dug-out in the sand-dunes. The visit greatly boosted the morale of the many thousands of Polish troops based in Scotland at the time
