Her Majesty and His Royal Highness afterwards visited Liverpool One, a development of shops, hotels and residential properties in the city centre.

The Queen viewed musical performances and The Duke of Edinburgh attended a topping-out ceremony on the roof of a 13-storey apartment block, the latest building in the project to be completed.

Mr. Rod Holmes, project director at Liverpool One, said: "The investment and development has kick-started a remarkable rejuvenation, creating a new sense of pride and optimism in Liverpool, as well as jobs, opportunities and a better environment.  The Queen's visit is recognition of this wonderful change."

Her Majesty and His Royal Highness later attended a Reception at St. George's Hall with guests involved in Liverpool Capital of Culture and the regeneration of the city before being entertained to Lunch by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool.

Built in the mid 19th century, St. George's Hall recently underwent an extensive restoration programme and was reopened by The Prince of Wales in 2007.

In the afternoon The Queen visited the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at Philharmonic Hall and was welcomed with a fanfare performed by a brass quintet from the youth orchestra.

Her Majesty listened to a performance by the youth choir and afterwards heard a performance by the Orchestra of Brahms' Variations on a Theme of Haydn.  The Queen is the Orchestra's Patron.

Previously Her Majesty and His Royal Highness attended the Maundy Service in Liverpool Cathedral in April 2004.
