Honorary Royal posts such as Poet Laureate, Astronomer Royal and Master of The Queen's Music are awarded to figures who have achieved eminence in their fields.

There are a number of special appointments made by The Queen.

Some of these are important ceremonial roles, such as those of Earl Marshal, Lord Great Chamberlain and Lord Steward. These are three of the historic Great Officers of State who play a part in official events such as coronations and visits by the Sovereign to Parliament.

Others are honorary positions which are bestowed upon figures who have achieved eminence in their fields. Positions such as those as Poet Laureate, Astronomer Royal and Master of The Queen's Music no longer have any specific duties attached, although their holders often choose to use their role in a public way.

All these Royal offices have long histories and fascinating traditions.
