Housekeeping Supervisor
"One of the highlights of my career so far was when I travelled to France for a State visit."

I joined the Royal Household in November 1999 and am a Housekeeping Supervisor within the Master of the Household's Department.

How did you get your job with the Royal Household?
I joined the Royal Housekeeping Assistant when I left college in 1999. As my knowledge and skills have developed over the last six years, I have gained increased responsibility and was promoted first to Senior Housekeeping Assistant, and then to my current role in February 2004.

What experience and qualifications do you need to work as a Housekeeping Assistant?
I would advise anybody looking for a career in housekeeping to gain some professional experience in the housekeeping or hospitality sector, but to also be willing to learn and train on the job. Additionally you have to be self-motivated, be able to work well in a team and be able to provide exceptional service.

What training and support are available to you?
There is a large amount of on-the-job training. I have completed the Royal Household certificate in housekeeping, which is City and Guilds accredited. I have also taken part in training provided by the Royal Collection department in the cleaning and upkeep of antique furniture and works of art.

What does your job entail?
Since being promoted to Housekeeping Supervisor I now oversee a team of four Housekeeping Assistants who clean the 'chamber' or second floor at Buckingham Palace.

What is the best thing about your job?
I particularly enjoy travelling to other royal residences - Balmoral is my favourite. There is a real sense of community among the staff who 'live in' and travel. One of the highlights of my career so far was when I travelled to France for a State visit. During the trip I was a personal assistant for one of The Queen's ladies-in-waiting. I felt a real sense of pride and job satisfaction when I watched the lady-in-waiting on television wearing an outfit I had prepared earlier that day.
