CUT OUT A MODEL OF THE GOLD STATE COACH

After the austere years of the Second World War, the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953 was an excuse for the country to indulge in some serious celebrations.

The route taken by the procession was extended to give more people the chance to catch a glimpse of Her Majesty travelling inside the glittering Gold State Coach. Stands were erected along the streets of the capital between Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, and people bagged their places hours in advance, to witness the fairytale spectacle.

Souvenir sellers passed among the throng, selling flags and all sorts of guides and mementos for the great occasion.

Many children enjoyed creating their own three-dimensional model of the Great State Coach, cutting out a paper template from a popular souvenir booklet published to mark the Coronation. The model of the coach is reproduced here below.

You can create your own three-dimensional model of the Gold State Coach, which was used on Tuesday 4 June 2002 for the procession of The Queen to St. Paul's Cathedral for Golden Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving.

Print out this page with its two templates. To print press Ctrl-P for PCs, or Command-P for Macintosh computers. You can print the templates in colour, or use crayons to decorate a black and white version. Then paste the paper onto cardboard, cut around the carriage, bend and stick the tabs as indicated - and you too can create your own paper version of the Gold State Coach.

Children should ask for the help of an adult before using sharp scissors.
